CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Washington, D.C. â December â eternal space
At opposite sides of the backseat, Dorothy and Deirdre stared at each other. Dorothyâs interlocked fingers with her indexes pointing skyward tapped them against her chin.
âDid all that just really happen?â
Palms up was Deirdreâs first reply. âSee what I mean? He always makes me feel like that.â She went into a meditative pose, yoga hands on crossed knees, eyes closed. Dorothyâs eyes washed over her.
They pulled from the alley and passed between Cultured and Lesbian Times across the street from each other. The gold Cultured sign glowed under its spotlight. Dorothy straightened. âHey, isnât that your magazine office?â
Deirdreâs eyes stayed closed. âYep. Thatâs it. Nothing much.â
âRight, so humble. Iâd like to see where you work.â
âBelieve me, thereâs nothing to see. Donât even have a desk there.â Deirdre peered at Dorothy with one eye. âBesides, where I work is with you.â
âWell, where do you write? Youâve been with the campaign for four months. I havenât seen you write anything.â
Deirdre reached into her purse and pulled out her tiny recorder. âNot much on note taking. I blab into this quite a bit. Iâm compiling everything at home.â
âA recorder?â Dorothyâs voice elevated. âWhatâve you been recording?â
âDonât worry, Dot. Iâve never recorded any live conversations. Itâs just me yakking away.â
âYou called me, Dot.â
âOh!â Hand to mouth. âSorry, sorry! I didnât thinkââ
âExcept for Cristhal, itâs been some time since anyone has called me that⦠or darling, by the way.â
âIâm sorry. I wonâtââ
âNo. Itâs fine. I donât mind⦠I enjoy hearing it from you.â
Deirdre answered with a warm smile and enfolded her hand over Dorothyâs. Dorothy gazed down in her lap and didnât return the gesture, but didnât take her hand away, either.
Deirdre leaned forward. âYou know, Iâm still ready to listen to those murky delusions of yours.â She glanced at Laima. âOf course, maybe in a car with a driver isnât best.â
Dorothy chuckled. âLaima is my samurai and true friend. She follows an ancient code and many of her own. Iâd trust her with my life. Besides, she already knows it all, donât you, Laima?â
âAnd then some, maâam.â
Deirdre smiled at the warmth between the two women. Dorothy contemplated her own reflection in the window, obscured in a syncopated rhythm as they passed beneath streetlights.
âCan you see my reflection in the window, Dee?â
Turning her head, Deirdre watched for several seconds. âYes. Except when the lights wash it out.â
âThatâs how my memories are. Crystal clear one moment, transparent the next.â She pulled her hand from Deirdreâs comfort. âYou should understand that the world was a different place before. Although it wasnât exactly Orwellian, the government and public mind-set were pretty close. But we were different, my Kenny and I.â
She brought her eyes away from the window to settle on Deirdre. âAIDS was the scariest thing to hit the world since the bomb blast at Hiroshima, but all the hatred and prejudice was heaped almost solely on the gay population. Then, 9/11, and the country was afraid of everything Muslim. Now,
